The Iron Daughter (The Iron Fey #2) by Julie Kagawa

Title: The Iron Daughter (The Iron Fey #2)
Author: Julie Kagawa
Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult, Romance, Adventure
Published: August 2010

My Rating: 5/5

Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron fey—ironbound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her.

Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's stuck in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.

I did get a lot of mixed feelings while reading this one; sometimes I was incredibly happy, rooting for Ash, and then others I just wanted to kill him, or anyone, simple as that. So I’m just going to let it all out and share these feelings with you :)

If you haven’t read my post about The Iron King, the first book in this series, then I’d recommend you to go read that one, because there may be some spoilers here or things you won’t understand. If you don’t care about any of that, or if you have read this book, then just keep reading :).

Something I really liked about this book is that it explains what happened in the previous one; this is great if you’ve read The Iron King a long time ago or if you’ve forgotten some things, and it’s not even boring or tedious, it’s done really well.

But seriously, I thought I was going to throw my kindle at the wall at some point. Can Ash just, for ONE SINGLE SECOND, stop talking about freaking Ariella?! Was I the only one getting tired of this? (And a tad bit jealous from Meghan’s POV) Meghan should’ve been like ‘Yeah ok, whatever, you still love this girl and will forever, so let me just go then, I’m done’… No, she actually liked this part of him, but I didn’t, I did not! I know, I know he was very much in love with Ariella and it was a tragedy what happened to her but COME ON! There’s this awesome girl here who loves you, you know you love her too, and you’re just going to say to her ‘I thought I liked you because you remind me of her’ Uhm… seriously? Rude. There were times where I was actually starting to root for Puck because of this stupid behavior, don’t ever compare your new girl to a previous one, man! What’s wrong with you?? Meghan’s awesome!

Another thing that bothered me about Ash was the whole ‘I have to obey my queen’ thing, I know they have all these crazy rules in the Nevernever, but do you always have to bring that up? Even if it’s not relevant, Ash? Do you? Because I think not, and I think your mom kind of hates you by the way, just saying.

We also get to see a lot more about how deals work in this world. Why? Because cute little Meghan here just can’t seem to stop saying, to every freaking creature she encounters, something like ‘Oh hi! What’s up? By the way, do you want to make a deal?’. Like, you just get one firstborn child, Meghan, stop promising everyone that baby.

When I first started this series I was all ‘Oh I know, I KNOW, I’m so going to love Ash, and I’m so going to root for him, like, he’s so cool’, ooh I was so young and naive (mind you, this was just a few days ago). But yeah, you just saw how much I freaked out about his behavior in this book, and apparently he also thinks he’s invincible, I know he’s a fey and all, and really strong, but Ash, you nearly died in the previous book. Remember?? Remember that, HUH?!

Ash is everything I like in a male character; he’s serious, mature, quite the gentleman… And Puck is the total opposite; I’m just not crazy about class clowns. But while reading this book, something incredible happened… There was a moment where I was actually hoping there was a small little chance that Puck would get the girl… And then there’s the kiss!! But a little while later I liked Ash again, and then Puck, and then Ash, and then Puck… and then Ash again… I always end up liking Ash, damn it!

There was also something making me really nervous all the time, Meghan didn’t have her glamour, she couldn’t use it. So she was always risking her life, especially at the end and I was just freaking out. But then we see that she also has another kind of glamour: iron glamour! And I loved that. Now, I usually think Meghan makes good decisions… sometimes… but she spent a lot of time at Leanansidhe’s doing nothing, she actually started reading some books… Couldn’t she just practice using that glamour? I bet someone could’ve gotten her like a ring or something, and it’s no big deal really, she would’ve just promised them her firstborn child, so why not?

I also loved Ironhorse a lot, I got a little emotional when he died. He had this amazing evolution from the first book, in The Iron King I actually hated him (not at first though, when we just met him he didn’t hurt Meghan or anything like that), but in this book I just loved him, he was so adorable wanting to protect Meghan, and I just thought it was so cute that he had dreadlocks in his human form, I don’t know, can you imagine that? Kagawa did a great job with this character.

And finally… that ending! Like… what??
‘Oh ok, hi Queen Mab! Uhm, we just risked our lives like a million times and got the stupid scepter back to save all your sorry butts.’
- ‘GIVE ME THAT OH SO IMPORTANT SCEPTER, YOU JUST SAVED OUR LIVES AND NOW GET OUT OF THE NEVERNEVER. FOREVER.’

Really? I know they have all these weird laws and rules over there that make no sense, but really? Now I really hate Mab too, join the club girl, Titania and Oberon were just waiting for you. Oh and like Mab exiled Ash, Oberon exiled Meghan too, he was just less bitchy.

So that’s it, lots of emotions like I said, but I did looove the book, don’t get me wrong! This one also gets 5 stars from me :) there were just so many things going on that I went a little crazy haha.

Thank you for reading! Bye-Bye!

  6. I really liked the last two books in this series the best, I think. I did have some issues, but it was still an enjoyable series.
