Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

Title: Wuthering Heights
Author: Emily Brontë
Genre: Classic, Gothic
Published: December 1847

My Rating: 1/5

Wuthering Heights is a wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine's father. After Mr Earnshaw's death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine's brother Hindley and wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. The action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature.

I really like reading Classics, so I thought I’d give Wuthering Heights a try, since it’s so popular and a lot of people seem to love it. It’s said to be a story of passion and intense romance between two young people: Catherine and Heathcliff. One day Catherine’s father finds and adopts little Heathcliff, who is then always bullied by Hindley, Catherine’s brother. After growing up he leaves the house, believing his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, and returns a few years later as a wealthy man, seeking revenge for all the suffering he went through as a child.

So all that stuff about revenge really caught my attention and I was very excited about the way the story would develop... But oh how I hated this book… seriously. This doesn’t happen to me very often! I like doing a little bit of research every time I’m going to read something and I usually end up loving most books I read. I was so thankful this is a short novel, because I really wanted to finish it… so that I could criticize it well :) And I hate leaving things unfinished.

I think what made me dislike this book so much was the fact that I hated every single person in it. How is that even possible?! The only person that I tolerated was Lockwood, he’s kind of a good guy… And maybe even Edgar Linton (after he grew up)… But I hated Catherine and Heathcliff and Nelly and Cathy and just everyone, especially Joseph, he’s such a bad person, really! So much for being religious, tolerant and forgiving… What a jerk.

And it was not just that, I didn’t see the amazing love story everyone talks about. All I saw were two people being mean to each other and really annoying all the time. And oh so selfish.

Other than that, I think it is really well written, and I even added a few new words to my vocabulary thanks to it! :) But sorry Emily, Charlotte is still my favorite; I just love Jane Eyre so much! (Even if I felt like punching her in the face more than once for her bad decisions).

Have you read Wuthering Heights? Did you like it? If you did I’d really appreciate it if you left a comment, just because I didn’t like it doesn’t mean it’s bad, I’d love to see what others think about it.

Thank you for reading! Bye-Bye!
