Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Title: Hex Hall (Hex Hall #1)
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Publisher: Hyperion
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal, Fantasy, Supernatural
Publication: March 2, 2010

My Rating: 2/5

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father—an elusive European warlock—only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tag-along ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

Ok. Well, I'm obviously the minority here.

I'll have to admit that I almost DNF this, but I wanted to give it a try and the book's not really that long, to be honest. A lot of people I know have read this and loved it, and the blurb makes it sound amazing, so I actually thought I would enjoy it.

Don't get me wrong, the story wasn't that bad, I guess, but I wasn't very entertained.

I think the author did an amazing job putting all those different creatures together. Witches, warlocks, faeries, shapeshifters... It worked. But other than that, I wasn't crazy about it.

The main character can't stop making jokes for the life of her. She just can't (and what's with all the pop culture references?). I know most readers find her hilarious and she's the reason they couldn't put down the book, but Sophie didn't make me laugh, not even once. She didn't even make me smile.

Then we have Archer, who we know is obviously going to become the love interest when we meet him...
Never liked the guy.

Archer is just immature, full of himself and a bad boy wannabe. I've also never been a fan of a love interest who's already in a relationship with someone else (in this case, the prettiest girl in school, didn't see that one coming, right?), I think the only exception for me was Anna and the French Kiss, and that's actually the one thing that bothered me about the book.

But thank goodness there were some characters I liked! Jenna was adorable. I mean, a cute, lesbian vampire who's obsessed with the color pink? Yes, please.

Mrs Casnoff was also ok.

And then we also had Cal. I know the guy only had like five lines in the whole book, but he's WAY better than Archer. I would've preferred having him as love interest.

That was pretty much it. A little bit disappointed by this book, but hey, at least I got to meet Jenna, I liked her.

Have you read Hex Hall? Did you like it?

Thank you for reading! Bye-Bye!

  1. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this one - I had fun with the two first books, then lost interest in the third.

  6. Ah, sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy this one at all. It seems to have stemmed from the fact that you really didn't like a lot of the main characters, and even when you liked a few of the secondary ones they weren't mentioned nearly enough to satisfy you. I think I don't actually have this one on my TBR and I don't think I will be putting it on there. Hope the next read is better! x
